One of the unique features of the Madison Area Educational Special Services Unit (SSU) is its close relationship with the Indiana Department of Mental Health. One benefit of this relationship is that two state hospitals are fully participating members of our Special Education Cooperative.
The five school corporations, in three counties, which are also members of the cooperative, provide space in their regular school buildings in which SSU staff members perform a variety of services including testing, counseling, therapy, and resource room teaching. This three-county service area contains approximately 28 elementary and secondary schools. There are 16 elementary schools. Our unduplicated special ed enrollment is 2233 as of 12/1/06.
